Alex’s Traffic Challenge the total overview

January 3rd, 2009 · 19 Comments

My report for the traffic competition

My Google Analytic Stats can be viewed here for the full period of the competition

http://kotobot.com/gastats/gastatsfinal.pdf

Well that’s the traffic challenge over.
It has been a happy and educational journey for me

I have used the word challenge instead of competition.
Because I think Alex wanted us to challenge ourselves rather than our fellow students.
To find in ourselves the motivation and organisation (The Kotobot) needed to succeed in this business.

He asked us to do one task; drive traffic
He didn’t ask us to get sign ups or sales.
I think the reasoning here was you have nothing unless you have traffic first.
Then the sign ups and sales will come.

And the sign ups did follow; I got 778 in the 18 days.
This represented 1.9% of our traffic of 41,152 visitors in the 18 days.

So 2 things to be learned here
We need a lot of traffic coming through our doors
And find ways to increase our visitor’s conversion rate.

My next blog post will be about Google Page Ranking
how it can increase your traffic and Google positioning.
and how it helped us to increase our traffic on kotobot.com
while getting us to a Google Page Rank of 2 in less than 3 weeks

    Hey

Amazing stats there. Very impressive. I’m trying to implement some of your techniques.

Which do you feel was the most effective?

    Hi Jim,

Truly awesome stats. Almost too good to be true – In fact, we should focus on what you are doing and forget Alex Jeffreys as you can teach him a trick or two, LOL! 

Have you analysed your breakdown of your traffic sources in Google? In fact, would you mind revealing your top 10-20 sources? For anyone reading out there it is easy to generate 5, 10, 20,000 hits in the next 24-hours by using Hit Booster type programs that are available all over the place on the Internet. Quantity isn’t the problem for traffic generation using these types of techniques but quality is.

Just wondering with the techniques you have used have you tried to analyse your traffic sources to work out which technique has generated the traffic and thus separate the good from the bad. It would certainly be a useful exercise for you (and everyone) so you can find those techniques that are truly the ones to focus on.

Also regarding the nearly 800 posts on blogs over the last 2 weeks. Now you say you are adding a valuable comment and hence I guess not just a one-liner. Now it takes me an age to type comments on blogs, as like you, I like to add value rather than just one liners of no value. For me, using a very, very conservative estimate of just 10 minutes a comment doing it manually would take me nearly 10 hours a day for 14 days. I just haven’t got that time so would appreciate any feedback on what tools you are doing. Or are you really spending that amount of time blogging and keeping going drinking loads of “Red Bull”, LOL.

I’d like to know as I am on a ‘world tour’ as mentioned on my own site and whatever you are using for ‘oil-rig hopping’ I’d like to do the same!!

    Hi Jim,

by the way, I noticed you haven’t added Gravatars to your site, so that a little photo or image comes up for each person who leaves a comment. .

If you’re running Wordpress 2.7, you can enable it just by going into settings > discussion, and scroll down to the Gravatar section and turn it on. It will make the comments more interactive and attractive.

I’ve posted some videos on my site - http://www.TheNetExperiment.com if you want more information about setting them up :)

  • 18 Mark McWilliams // Jan 12, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Crikey, some impressive results for only 18 days! I wouldn’t mind that over a year, so it’d be interesting to see what kind of results you have after. Maybe you could come back in a months time, and tell us how things are going? :D

In fact, I too would be VERY much interested to see and hear where most (If not all!) your traffic is coming from. Is it going to be repeat traffic that will return again in say 3-4 weeks time,or traffic where they visit once and never return again?… I definately know what kind of traffic I’d prefer!

Now I know that it was the start of the New Year, and most people are out enjoying themselves, but that looks like some drop between December 31st 2008 and January 1st 2009. Although the results from 2nd and 3rd, seem to be showing a steady increase again.

    Thanks
    Mark

Very interesting and informative series. Thanks for sharing. Glad to see your plan has worked out so well for you.
Do you think you might make this into an info product that would compile all you did and the stats?

    Good Fourtune to you
